Crazy Over Crayfish
Crayfish came to visit our class recently. These crustaceans are found in our local creeks and it was such a great learning experience to observe these animals up close.
The kids were so excited, and a little nervous, to observe and even hold them. The students were very responsible and thoughtful about the way they handled the crayfish.
Prior to the visit, the kids and I read a research article about crayfish emotions. New research suggests that crayfish can feel anxiety, an emotion thought too advanced for these prehistoric crustaceans. It was great for the students to recognize that these animals would be nervous and possibly scared in our class and they needed to be handled with care.
With the launch of our PBL it is important that the students have a connection to our local creek and the animals that call it home.
Driving Question (PBL): How can we, as environmentalists, research and propose a solution to filter silt from the Steven’s Creek Reservoir and explain why this solution is necessary for the health of the creek.
This connection will drive them to find a solution that may help the health of our creeks and the many creeks around the world that are faced with excess silt issues.
Have a great weekend!
